Realisations before Resolutions

I had one major goal for 2023.

I didn’t accomplish that goal.

Angst and anger would be typical reactions. But I surprised myself by being at peace with what I would have otherwise labelled “an epic failure.” Instead, in that moment, I had an epiphany; chasing goals comes with too much pressure and doesn’t take cognisance of the natural flow of life. Basically, we need to accept that some goals may be delayed or diverted. And, we need to celebrate the small goals  – those that add to self-growth and our process of becoming the best version of ourselves.

It’s about realisations before resolutions. So, if you haven’t made any resolutions yet, you’re in the right place. While you can find tons of articles about this approach online, I’m sharing my interpretation here, based on personal experiences which perhaps you will find relatable.

Scenario 1: You want to create a daily savings plan but don’t know where to start.

Realisation: You can start by cutting down on buying takeaway coffee daily. Note to self! If you know me and my coffee addiction, I hope you’re having a chuckle.

Scenario 2: You find yourself rushing and you’re perpetually late in the mornings.

Realisation: You can go to bed earlier so you’re up on time. And you can save time by creating a work wardrobe capsule every Sunday. I’ve stated implementing this. So far, so good.

Scenario 3: You are struggling to achieve what you have your heart set on.

Realisation: Now it’s your turn to answer. Be brutally honest with yourself, and be kind too. Seems like an oxymoron but it’s possible. Write it down or say it out aloud but listen to that inner voice. Yes, I’m practicing that too.

I’m tired of hearing the line that “we are our own worst critics.” Let’s change it to “we are our own biggest cheerleaders.” In doing so, we will motivate and inspire ourselves to smash those goals, at our own pace. It shouldn’t be a race. It’s about appreciating the lessons amid the journey, and taking some time to enjoy the little things – like walking along the shore on a starry summer’s night. Those are the moments that speak to your soul and rejuvenate your inner self.

Think of yourself as a bud that needs sunlight and water to eventually flower. Each delicate petal reveals itself differently and at different times. It’s a beautiful transfomation, true to nature’s timing.

May your 2024 be a majestic unravelling of your true colours, petal by petal.
