To teaching, and thriving

So, this happened. And I’m still overwhelmed. Yes, it was for the 2022 academic year, but I only picked it up a few weeks ago. I hope that explains why I’m super delayed with this post, as we’re full swing into the first semester of 2023 and I’m loving it, again.

2022 was a whirlwind. A year where I returned to lecturing – the magic, the madness, and the marking! Read about it here if you missed it.

A different kind of love

While the name on this certificate is mine, the success is not mine alone. Yes, I spent hours upon hours lecturing to my students. I obsessed over every PowerPoint presentation, and there were many! I ensured that the theory always had practical lessons to match. And I brought industry professionals to campus to help prepare learners for the world of work.

I did all this, because I was in an environment that allowed me to give off my best. It’s an environment that overflows with warmth, where you’re greeted with smiles at any time of the day. From management to student support to academic operations – we all had one goal – students need to leave Rosebank College Durban not just with a qualification in hand, but richer in experience that will enable them to flourish in life.

It felt amazing to be part of this team. I would bounce around campus with ideas and questions – us journalists, we ask a lot of questions, because we’re pedantic to the point of being annoying. My questions were always answered, and I was always encouraged to follow up on my ideas.

I was driven by passion, never by the thought that there would be this accolade at the end. I had not expected this. Of course, I’m happy. Okay, I’m elated! This recognition is an affirmation of what I hold close to my heart – that teamwork makes the dream work. I’m so grateful that my dream to help train future journalists is taking shape.

What’s even more special is the date on the certificate – my birthday. It melts my heart. It always will. At this rate, I better get my tissues ready as my students will graduate in exactly two months!

For now, it’s back to working on those PowerPoint presentations…
