Someone recently asked me what my career highlight is. I responded, “Every day, every show is a highlight.”
Until that moment, I had not thought about my career in that way. Now, in retrospect, I’m proud of my response because it means I love what I do on a daily basis.
Allow me to elaborate.
When people respond to the content you have created, when they engage on air, feel moved, inspired, happier, lighter, emotional even, that’s a highlight, because that’s good radio.
When people listen to podcasts and watch videos of interviews that you produced, after lots of research and thought, that’s a highlight, because we live in an era where digital content is a game-changer.
When social investment campaigns you have been working on behind the scenes, spark awareness, that’s a highlight.
No this isn’t self-appraisal, but self-reflection.
May marks 4 years and 1 month as a producer on Lotus FM. Prior to that I worked for some 15 years as a journalist at SABC Radio News and the current affairs programme Newsbreak on Lotus FM. Journalism remains foundation. My experience as a journalist continues to hold me in good stead in this phase of my career, and I am building on my skills.
As part of the incredible Lotus FM programming team, I have learnt more about the business side of radio – from advertising to marketing and digital. And of course, remote work has had me do all this in fast motion. Talk about the adrenaline of live radio!
Is there more I can learn and improve upon?
Of course.
As my dear sister reminded me recently, we must embrace a culture of lifelong learning.
There’s no stopping now. Here’s to more highlights, every day, every show.
It’s no secret that you love what you do. Your passion shines through. But I do love your answer. That every day, every show is your best. This shows your commitment which is admirable.
